WORKSHOP FOR TALENT DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE (GE BRANCH)

The Gifted Education Branch (Ministry of Education) organised the Talent Development Institute from 16 November to 19 November 2009 to provide enrichment for high-ability primary school pupils.
I was invited to be a trainer to run a Maths Magic Workshop. The students and I explored the world of puzzles and discovered the mathematical wonders hidden in those puzzles. The activities engaged as well as stimulated the high-ability learners intellectually as the content was rigorous and based on the curriculum or extension of the curriculum. Furthermore, the students learned about new approaches to mathematical problem solving, creative and analytical thinking, discovered how practical mathematics could be in everyday life, and awed their family and friends with their new magical "mathematical powers".
There were hands on sessions with puzzles like Tower of Hanoi, typological, disentanglement, take apart, put together, matching, 2D and 3D sliding, dexterity, solitaire, magic squares, NIM strategies and many other interesting activities. The students made and created their own magical games that they took home with them after the workshops. After acquiring the "mathematical powers", the students then took on the IQ Puzzle Challenge to see if they would truly qualify as a Puzzle Master.
